First off, I wanted to call this review A Night of Covers – but I promised Mr. Groupie I’d be nice …
So instead we’ll call this “an honest review by Bowman: Collective Concerts presents Friday January 3rd 2013 Lee’s Palace”.
SAY YES – If I had to describe their sound I would say they’re a perfect blend of Queens of the Stone Age meets the Muse (old Muse) with a little bit of drunken violent yet desperate clinging to life Hawksley Workman – but in a good way, though. Featuring Jordan Hastings (Alexisonfire, Jersey) on drums, Adam Michael (St. Alvia, TNBT) on guitar and vocals and Michael Zane (The Exhile) on bass and vocals – these boys are a force to be reckoned with.
Dan Griffin’s music is good for your heartbroken travelling soul. If you are a fan of Hayden‘s haunting piano, Neil Young‘s delayed and dirty hooks and Springsteen‘s working man melodies, then you will love Dan’s latest EP Bordertown. It’s a perfect follow up to his 2011 release Leave Your Love. This simple 5 track EP with all its intros and outros, is beautifully produced to blend together as a 1 – 15 min long cohesive song – and it feels that way.
10 years after the released their self titled debut, Billy Talent played BT 1 in its entirety in front of their loyal and more-than- enthusiastic hometown fans. This past weekend the Sound Academy was packed to the side bars – very reminiscent of some of the early European rectangular venues Billy Talent eventually graduated from after their 2003 BT 1 record came out.
Billy Talent recently was asked to play an outdoor NXNE concert. Again, I got to run around and have a blast around the stage while they killed it in front of thousands of NXNE goers and BT fans of all sorts. Great home town show for all!
SAY YES is a brand new band emerging from Burlington ON Canada featuring former Alexisonfire drummer Jordan Hastings, Adam Micheal formerly of Saint Alvia Cartel on guitar and vocals and Michael Zane on bass. They recorded their debut EP with the amazing Justin Koop at B-Town Sound Burlington and will be making their TO debut on the 24th at the Legendary Horseshoe Tavern for Nu Music Night – Hamilton on the 27th at The Casbah and then back for more with SEAS ( ex Moneen members) at the Hard Luck on the 28th.
While back stage after their ACC show I was asked to come to Kitchener the next day with the band. This night was more intimate and I was allowed anywhere in the auditorium to shoot. Caught them warming up and even got to play cowbell (and share stage) with almost famous photographer Dustin Rabin during Surprise Surprise. Hands down one of my favourite experiences on stage.
On their recent cross Canada Tour earlier this year – with Sum 41, Hollerado and Indian Handcrafts, Billy Talent stopped into their hometown and rocked the roof off the ACC. Been friends with these kids from before the start of their careers so whenever I get a chance to see them I usually get to take photos and run around backstage.
I first met Raina Douris a few years back when my band was playing an Edge Steamwhistle storefront studio gig and later while corresponding with her about playing Edgefest in ’08 – trying to score drink tickets.
